[Update April 16, 2010, case upgrade] Good playing student horn in solid condition. Sound is surprisingly full and lively. Tuning is good - repairs have improved it. Plays well with a wide variety of mouthpieces. Appearance is still pretty good, but it has clearly been around the block a few times.
CONDITION: I received this horn in playable condition, but with substantial denting in the bell throat, tail and the leadpipe. There were also a number of smaller dents. I removed all structural dents, but there are minor surfaces irregularities scattered over the horn. Repairs required removal and reinstallation of the leadpipe.
All slides are well aligned, snug and free. After an adjustment job, valves are quick, quiet, and seal very well. Lacquer coverage is about 85-90%. I have sanded off burnt lacquer where necessary and polished exposed metal to even out appearance.
CASE: ABS molded plastic with aluminum valence. All latches work (one has been replaced), and the valence is well in line. Interior is good, with support block, compression cushion and bell support form.
OPTIONAL EXTRAS:
Numerous standard mouthpieces from $15-50.
HISTORY: The original Conn 14D was introduced in 1954 as a low cost alternate to the venerable 4D, which had been in production since 1919. UMI corporation acquired both Conn and King in the early 1980's and merged operations in the King plant in Eastlake, OH. Some time between 1978 and the mid-1980's, the original model 14D was dropped in favor of one based on the King 618. This horn is of the later form.
I have no reliable information relating serial numbers to production dates after the mid-1980's. A system of numbering which had been developed during the years in Abilene TX was dropped some time after about 1985, but no one seems to know what has been used since. I believe this horn is no more than fifteen years old.
CONDITIONS OF SALE: Payment methods accepted: By mail: money order, cashier's check or personal check; wire transfer; cash or equivalent is expected if picking up in person. Other methods are possible by arrangement.
SHIPPING: I ship to continental USA only. Insured USPS parcel post typically runs $20-45 depending on distance; priority mail may range from a bit less (local) to half again as much (long distance). Fedex ground has proved an attractive alternative. Pick-up in Chicago or other shipping methods are fine by arrangement.
